These paintings on paper began while doing pattern research as an artist-in-residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT in 2019.

The images are based on observations of the weaver’s draft notation, a visual diagram referenced by weavers to create a textile pattern. In this series, I work within the structure of the grid (graph paper), symbolic of the x (horizontal) and y (vertical) axes of the loom’s warp and weft. In making these works I think about how the draft notation serves as a universal equation of utility.
